Almost Breakfast Rituals

This giveaway is now closed.

We have rhythms in our house much more than we have rituals.  Maybe because there are so many people and so many chances for well-laid plans to go awry, maybe because I have great intentions, but not so great follow-through, maybe because my husband is more of a fun-loving fly by the seat of your pants kinda guy and less of a set in stone kinda person.  I don’t know, whatever it is, we have a hard time sticking to any one thing.

Last year’s holiday cooking extravaganza before Christmas.

But as we were thinking back to Christmases past we realized a lot of times we’ve mixed up a breakfast casserole the night before (just mix all the ingredients and leave uncooked, cover and set in fridge), popped it in the oven the morning of Christmas just after all the excitement has waned, and voila’ instant meal!  As I’ve said many times before we have to have protein to start the day off or our emotions are all over the place with too much sugar.  And Christmas morning, being a particularly sweet affair, needs much more balancing.  With the make-ahead egg casserole we don’t spend our special morning in the kitchen, we can spend it with our kiddos.  And that’s really what matters, right?

To enter, leave a comment telling me if you have a yearly morning tradition that your family participates in.

Usually Christmas morning (or whatever morning around Christmas we are with my parents), my dad gets into the kitchen to cook his “infamous” breakfast!! We call it “Cripe” and it’s a recipe for a thick, heavy pancake made with simple ingredients and cooked in oil, that tradition says his parents only had during “tight times”. Then we cover it in syrup AND brown sugar!!! So not healthy….

but it’s only ONCE a year!!

And we all have such fun “cripe” memories and didn’t even realize it was a tradition until my brothers , introducing their future wives to the family, asked for the “cripe” recipe one Christmas!

For the past 27 years, I have made braided “candy cane” (shape) cherry sweetbreads for Christmas.

On Christmas Eve morning, I make 10-15 of these (they are 15-20″ long) and then deliver them to our 10-15 closest friends for their Christmas morning breakfasts, as well.

When we moved away 10 years ago, we had multiple friends that didn’t know what they were going to do for Christmas morning breakfast … they had each been eating my candy cane sweet breads for 10-15 years. :)

This year … I will be getting home on Christmas Eve … after driving 9,000 miles in the previous 5 weeks. I don’t think the sweet breads will be done by Christmas. Maybe I’ll have to make some for New Years.

Hmmm…yearly breakfast tradition? Everytime we go to my folks house for Christmas, the ALWAYS make Swedish pancakes for breakfast. Swedish pancakes and sausage. Of course, that’s what they make EVERY time we go to their house for breakfast, but hey…I need an contest entry. ;) Let’s call it tradition! :)

We are usually so busy on Christmas morning that we just eat whatever we can grab. I make bacon/ brown sugar green beans so Donny and I are eating on them when they come out of the oven. We can’t help it, they are so good! The kids are usually to excited to eat much. So by the time we get to my Grandma’s we are all starving and eat a good lunch.

I always make breakfast pizza on Christmas morning. I make the crust (or I have just bought a pre-made crust) ahead of time. then I scramble up some eggs quick, brown up some sausage or bacon and top it all with some shredded cheese. just a brief time in the oven and everyone is happy :)

We always have cinnamon rolls and a fruit dish consisting of grapefruit and orange sections on Christmas morning. The fruit tradition was started by my Grandma back when my Mom was a little girl. Oranges and grapefruit were definitely a special occasion item during the 40′s and early 50′s in rural West Virginia.

I’d like to think my family had the best Christmas breakfast tradition when I was growing up. My grandmother would buy champagne and smoked salmon as a special treat. It was my job to toast bread triangles, spread on some cream cheese, a slice of salmon, diced onions, lemon juice and capers… and we would devour platefuls of it with champagne (which I was only privy to after turning about 14). It was always very exciting and my sister and I would open our stockings as we had breakfast. This is my first Christmas with my own little family and I plan on continuing the tradition!

No yearly morning tradition just family breakfasts on Saturdays when we are in no rush to get out of the house.

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/scoomer Heather S

Our ritual consists of me cooking breakfast every morning. Scrambled eggs, sometimes waffles, crepes, french toast, or oatmeal. Then I help the kiddos get ready! On holidays we always make a little something holiday related for breakfast, like Boo-Berry Muffins!

We do have birthday tradition where each picks ALL day’s meals, and breakfast is silly, shaped tinted pancakes.(yes, even my now 18 year old senior still loves her pancakes in Mickey shapes with choco chips faces!)

Easter is a mad dash to church so always sweet rolls, Halloween is not anything special although the day after is my bday so sometimes I get kid-made breakfast in bed…complete with egg shells in scrambled eggs. Usually we are all too sick on candy to even eat breakfast that day!

our big tradition is on Christmas morning!
After gift opening on Christmas morning, we make heart shaped waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, baked omelets, sweet rolls, and breakfast meats. then we dive into the homemade holiday treat trays! the kids love to help with the waffles! they love to make them because of a timer that beeps like a birdie and makes them laugh still! They mound up redi whip on their waffles and we let them go CRAZy with it…going round and round like a christmas tree and add sprinkles to look like just that!

    thanks so much!

No traditions per se, or that I can think of buuuuttt every year we pack ourselves like sardines into a car and drive over to Grandma’s house and help with the cooking, if you can’t help with the cooking you’re helping clean up and set up the for dinner. We dont have a dinner table big enough, so we set up on the floor. lol*

Christmas morning is the certainly my favorite morning. My kids are early morning risers, and Christmas morning is no different. They are up usually at about 6am. We watch them open all their presents while my husband and I drink our coffee. The stash of new toys keeps them busy while I start cooking breakfast. Our tradition is french toast (made with my mother’s homemade Challah bread), bacon, eggs, and homemade home fries. We feast and it usually keeps us full and satisfied until Christmas dinner is ready!

  • Betty C

We don’t really have any breakfast rituals. The closest was occasional Winchell’s doughnuts on Sunday or when DH would cook breakfast on the weekend. For Christmas everyone was too anxious to open packages to have breakfast before the gifts. It got so that I would pop some Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls in the oven for a special treat after the gifts were open.

We always have breakfast at my house Christmas morning! We invite my aunt and uncle, mom and dad, grandparents – and everyone sits down for a nice family breakfast and my 5 year old son gets to show off his gifts from Santa! This year we’ll have a new addition – I have a baby due in a week, so it will be a little more challenging, but definitely special! I’ll be out on unpaid maternity leave through Christmas, so I would LOVE to win this to help actually purchase our breakfast items. Thanks for the chance! Here’s crossing my fingers!! :)
