Conquering Laundry

A couple of months ago I was absolutely overwhelmed by laundry.  I have a little laundry room.  Where my upright freezer, all the tools, the cat box, and a million other items that don’t fit anywhere go.  Oh, and laundry.  There’s definitely laundry in there.  After our dryer died for about the 10th time we bought a new washer and dryer set.  We bought it online like we do everything and I refused to pay the ridiculous amount they wanted for those little stands underneath.  We can always build a stand for them later.  For much less.

We also used to have an oversized chair/couch thing just outside my laundry room in an area that drives me crazy in our house.  It’s at the end of my kitchen just before my laundry room.  It’s by the back door.  Open, odd shaped and, for our needs, useless.  I would love to build shelves and close it in.  Extend the laundry room.  Make it a laundry room/pantry kind of place.  But that’s for my dreams.

Laundry had gotten out of hand.  I just don’t have time.  So I would keep it clean and dump pile after pile of clean clothes on that catch-all couch.  I wanted to do differently, but didn’t know how to make myself.  And then I read on Brenda’s blog about how you should change your house, not your habits.  That made SO much sense to me.  So I moved the couch out to my front porch.  Hoping to haul it off or burn it.  But then we had a local arsonist who put a kink in my burning plans and unfortunately there it still sits, like the white trash that we are.  But I digress.

I moved the table to the corner, found some empty shelves around the house and gathered what baskets I could find.  It ain’t pretty, folks, I don’t have the budget for pretty.  But it was free and practical.  And it WORKS!

So, here it is.

Yes, that’s my oldest sitting on top of the folding table doing his math work.  He needed “alone time” – works for me.  And, yes, that is gum you see sticking out of his mouth.

I dump the clean clothes onto the table and sort them into the baskets.  I don’t fold them.  The 3 older children sort and fold their own clothes right there in that big open area on the floor.  They do it when it gets full, when they run out of clothes in their room, or when I tell them to, whatever.  I throw all the hang up clothes onto the dryer to hang up when I’m done with all the rest.  I fold the towels and have the kids put them away.  I fold mine, Matt’s, the baby’s, and the 3 year old’s as I put them away – I carry them to their dressers in the baskets.

I put an “Outside Shoe” bucket by the back door.  When they come in or when they’re cleaning up, only the “outside shoes” can go there.  Then they know where they are when they need them and they don’t wear their “go to town shoes” in the mud.

That basket up on top is for all those things that get left at my house by friends or hand-me-downs for outside our immediate family.  The clothes that aren’t designated for anyone goes to a bucket in my room to donate to the local goodwill.

This is the inside of my laundry room (one side of it).

Aren’t those pretty machines?  My honey did so good!  My dad built the shelf and put in the bar at the top.  The big bucket is for all those clothes that are off-season, but didn’t get put up with the rest (because there’s always some, right?) and clothes the kids constantly outgrow but will go to the next child down.  This way, I don’t have to go into the stored bins every time I wash an item that needs to be put away.  I plan to let this fill up and then next season sort it all as I change the seasonal clothes out.

And this part, it requires a lot of imagination.  Are you ready?  I want these containers.  Eventually.

Plastic, about 18 inches high and 2 feet across each, stackable and in these colors, preferably.  I want them to sit in my laundry room and when my children bring dirty clothes from the four corners of the house they can immediately put them into the corresponding container.  Pinks, oranges, reds – red container, lights – white container, darks – black container.  When the container gets full I can just dump it right into the machine.  I’m on the lookout for these.  And my oldest 3 children (8, 7, and 5 year olds) all bring laundry from their assigned areas to clean everyday.

So, how do you do it?  What’s your laundry area look like?

Well that just totally and completely rocks! You’ve inspired me. Maybe I’ll just get back on track with my HTCI system!! I have been groaning at my laundry room lately and I KNOW I need to do something about it fast before I don’t fit in there anymore!!!! :)

awesomely inspiring!! Gave me new ideas for our laundry room/open basement AND I love the kids do-it-your-self part! There’s gonna be some changes around here!

Wow! Who in the world wouldn’t love this! You should get paid big money for coming up with these ideas. It was ALL good, but the best part was that little fellow sitting atop the folding table.

Sounds like you figured out a great system! We’re down to doing laundry for four, yet I still use the same system I developed when all six kids were at home. There’s a hamper in each bedroom (not the bathroom like a lot of families). On laundry day, which is Monday/Wednesday/Friday, the kids are responsible for getting their hamper to the laundry room. I don’t mind sorting, washing, drying, and folding, it’s the gathering and returning that I don’t like. So I do my part while they’re at school, and then the kids are responsible for putting their piles of clothes away when they get home. I’ve been fortunate to have a nice counter area in all of our laundry rooms, so that’s where the piles sit. Otherwise, we’d have to rig up some shelf/basket system like you did. Actually, now that I think about it, yours looks just like what my mom did! Maybe that’s why it seems like such a great idea!!

Mine is pretty similar to what you have right now…I guess it will all change when we move, and I will have to figure it out all over again! I have these plastic beach carry things…don’t know how to describe them, but I got them from Dollar Tree and each kid has their own. When it gets full, I make them put their clothes up. Creating that has helped me be more together with my laundry than I ever have been. I just fold and sort it as I get it out of the dryer. I bought a shower curtain rod to hang all my hangers on, and it keeps falling down, behind my dryer, with all my hangers…grr…

Oh yeah…so how are you liking that new washer/dryer? Can you tell a difference being able to do larger loads at once??

I love how you changed your house – not your habits. That is great advice!

Maury, well, I actually get done with laundry now. Whether that’s my new system or the machines I don’t know. I’m guessing a little of the system and a lot of the machines. If nothing else, the amount of time it takes to dry is phenomenal. I used to have one washing, one waiting washed and wet, and one in the dryer – at all times. Now they finish at the same time. I love ‘em.

Thanks for commenting! Yeah, the baskets mainly just keep it contained and since it’s in the middle of my kitchen, makes it look a little more pulled together. Thanks for sharing!

Glad I could help! Yeah, I LOVE the do-it-yourself part – I have a very particular child who only like to wear certain clothing. This way, if he doesn’t have it in his room it’s his own fault. I like that! This has been very freeing for me.

May we continue to inspire each other!! This is what I came up with in the midst of that “what do I do with all the laundry and out-grown clothes” crisis I was having – I just wanted to make sure it was going to “stick” before I blogged about it. It did and I love it.

Yay – I’m nothing if not inspiring for more work! ;)

By the way, I never told you, please always speak up – there’s no such thing as “just 2 kids” – having “just 2 kids” is what totally kicked my butt. Well, that and the fifth kid, but you already know about that!

I love the HTCI advice. I’ve been trying some out, thanks to you! I’m liking it, but have oh so far to go! I love your laundry system. Great job!! And the pic of him doing math on top of the table…well, I don’t feel so alone now having my kids doing school in all sorts of places. LOL

I cannot believe that is a folding table! That is a really cool folding table. Great washer & dryer, too. I got a new front loading washer a year or two ago. I can definitely tell a difference in how much laundry I am able to get done (when I remember to do the laundry). Actually your coming down to finish reading your article reminded me that I needed to get the laundry switched around…Thank you! I would’ve been in such trouble had I forgotten! My laundry is in the basement, so everything goes down the laundry shoot…then I sort them in my triple laundry sorter, plus a single, all from good ol’ Wal-mart. The best is when I’m on the ball and fold laundry straight from the dryer into the basket, but the kids have folding laundry as one of their chores, so that is good help that I don’t want to waste either. My laundry room was looking pretty spiffy, but at the moment, it looks really bad…full of stuff from painting the basement that I haven’t finished painting…drop clothes, cardboard, paint cans, brushes, rollers, tape…you get the picture. My old set of laundry sorter was being used for things to give away or put in storage & I let them get so full that the pvc pipe broke…so that is a mess, too…and my darling daughter is storing her nursery stuff and a mess of baby dolls in the laundry room because she doesn’t want guests to hurt them (throw or drop or drag the babies through the grass…which has happened). I agree with the other ladies, you are inspiring! I’ve always loved recycling my own stuff, but I haven’t done much of that lately.
