More Great Words (Mostly Ridiculous This Time)

While TheOldest was doing his Spanish schoolwork the other morning ThePrincess chimed in with correct words and meanings.  TheOldest looked up and said, “She’s going to be in high school by the time she’s 8 if she keeps learning like this.”

While TheMiddlest and TheOldest were playing Lego Star Wars on their DSes the other day TheOldest said, “Emperor Palpatine is evil.”  To which TheMiddlest replied, “Yeah, but a cool evil.”

While sitting around cooped up inside from the rain last week BigMan was banging on the floor with a play hammer loudly and repeatedly.  When Matt could take it no more he looked over at him and said, “Is that necessary?”  To which BigMan replied, “Nope, it’s a hammer.”

The other morning while I was doing dishes Matt came in and asked me how happy I was.  Let the games begin.  “I’m pretty happy.”  Met with, “On a scale of 1 – 10?”  “One being and 10 being?”  “One being a laparoscopy.  Ten being Six Flags.”  “No, Six Flags right now, postpartum with 5 little people is a nightmare, not a ten.”  “Okay, ten being Disney World.”  (Like somehow Disney World postpartum is better than Six Flags – it all makes sense in my world.)   ”Hmm.. I’d say I’m an eight.”  “You’re 2 steps away from Disney World right now?  That’s why I like you, Little Woman, doing dishes and taking care of kids and you’re 2 steps away from Disney World.”

While eating dinner last night, I looked over and MyPrincess was eating butter.  Straight.  I just shook my head and commented about how gross that was.  She laughed.  Matt said, “That’s the kind of thing when she’s grown that her husband and kids will say, ‘They let you eat butter?  No wonder you ____________(fill in the blank).’”  And then he started suggesting things her future family will fill in the blank – you know, future neuroses – such as “No wonder you gained 40 pounds when you went off to college” or better yet “No wonder you lost 40 pounds when you went off to college”, “No wonder you’re so crazy”, and then they turned to the truly ridiculous  “No wonder you only sleep on the floor”, and other such giggle-inducing fodder.  Good luck, future husband.  That’s all I can give you.  Good luck.

The Sweetest Words I’ve Heard

BigMan – “Him likes me, Mama.”

                   ”I love you, too, Baby.”

When Daddy was holding TheFinalist the other day, BigMan, already accustomed to seeing TheFinalist in my arms constantly, looked at my empty arms and asked where the baby was.  “Get him, Mom.”  “It’s okay, Daddy has him.”  “No, GET HIM, MOM!”

BigMan is very concerned about his nursing blister.  Wants to know when the “scrape” will go away.

The night before having him, BigMan was asking (again) how TheFinalist would come out of my belly.  I explained (yes, I did).  And then he asked “How the doctor help?  With a spoon or a knife?”  After laughing, I said, “I hope neither.”  And explained again (yes, I did).  He then asked to see where he would come out.  More laughing on my part, “No, sir.  We don’t look there.”  Last night, 11 days after TheFinalist’s birth and very little discussion between times about how he got here,  BigMan asked again to see “where him come out”.  “No, sir.  But thanks for the laughs!”

ThePrincess – “Look at his little hands.  His little ears.”

                            ”He’s a lot cuter than I thought he’d be.”

                            “He’s so soft, Mama.”

”I didn’t know he wouldn’t have any teeth.  I like his little mouth with no teeth in it.”

TheMiddlest – “He’s the King of all babies.”

                             ”He’s so pretty.”

After hugging me the other day, TheMiddlest said, “I like that I can hug you all the way around now.”  And while sitting next to me, “I can’t wait until your belly is real little so that I can sit in your lap again.”

TheMiddlest is worried about TheFinalist’s belly button.  He wants it to go away.  And loves when I give him a bath.  He likes how TheFinalist’s hair gets “fuzzy”.

TheOldest - ”He’s finally here.”

“I get to be his big brother now.”

TheOldest loves his baby smell.  Says my bed now smells like TheFinalist.  He talks about “that baby smell” a lot.

While I got dressed yesterday, TheFinalist was crying on the bed.  TheOldest crawled up and laid beside him.  He started singing to him and I heard TheOldest whispering things to him like, “You have little fingers.  Little hands.  Little face.  Little feet.”  And on and on.  When TheFinalist settled, TheOldest was so proud that he had settled him.

Though TheOldest’s words are not recorded as much, I should note, how much this child loves this baby.  Gazes at him.  Unbelievable really.  I’m continually amazed by his gentleness, his attentiveness, his adoration of him.

Heard constantly from all four, “Can I hold him now?”

When we all got packed into the van the first time, ThePrincess noted that, “We have A LOT of kids now!”

Children’s Book Tuesday: On Noah’s Ark

After a week off (you know, for having a baby and all) we’re back at it!  So, welcome to this week’s Children’s Book Tuesday!

On Noah’s Ark
Written and Illustrated by Jan Brett
On Noah's Ark cover

I love Jan Brett.  Really.  We only own 3 of her books currently, but I aim to change that.  She is amazing.  Her art work is gorgeous.  Her styling of the pages is masterful.  She packs so much into one picture that my kids love playing “I spy” with the pages.  I love how she has smaller pictures on the sides that show more of the story than she’s actually using words for.  I love that the words she does choose are well-thought out, sparse, and quiet.  I love that several of her books are not necessarily original (such as this one, obviously), but are a beautiful retelling.  And, if that’s not enough, she has this amazing website.  That I love to use in my homeschooling.  And the printables on her site are free.  Really?  You put your art on your site for free printing so that kids can become more involved in the books they’re reading?  Really?  Jan Brett, you’re just amazing.
