Toy Storage

I have posted before about how we store the massive amount of toys we have.  Here you can read about how we stash our organized toys sets.  And here I posted about how I helped my non-readers get in on the chores.

Today’s tip is for crawling babies and toddlers  (I hadn’t thought this was particularly noteworthy until Catherine saw it firsthand and suggested I blog about it!).  I discovered a few kids back that curious babies want to check out what’s in the cabinets and simultaneously want to be with you.  I also discovered that it didn’t take my kids long to figure out how to open those child-proof cabinet locks.  Along with these discoveries came the realization that I could avoid frustration on my part by replacing some of my cabinet contents with their favorite toys.  Saves your glassware, your babies, and your sanity.  It also hides a considerable amount of those not so pretty toys they love.  And because they are hidden I don’t have to worry about if they are organized in any specific way, just pick them up and toss them into the cabinet.  It’s not pretty, but who cares, just close the door.  All done!

So, tell me (or better yet – show me!) how you store your toys!

I do something very similar to this in our living room. There is a cabinet in there, and I got tired of all the toys in there, so I cleaned out the cabinet that he was already digging in, and now his toys are in there. It has worked out great!

That’s a great idea! I bet I have to tell Bryce to stay out of the cabinet under the kitchen sink about a million times a day! Alas, that’s the ONLY bottom cabinet I have and I don’t have too many higher ones. So, I need ever inch of cabinet space for my stuff! I used to just keep a tub in the living room for the toys, but I got tired of looking at it! So Cayson has a big tub in his closet for his bigger toys and different smaller storage tubs to contain the cars, blocks, thomas the train stuff, etc. For Bryce, I have a waffle block shelf thingie that he’s inherited from his daddy, along with a tub. I keep the bigger toys in the big tub and the smaller toys are semi-organized by type into small baskets that fit on the waffle block shelf thingie. It’s by no means, perfect, but it’s working fairly well right now…and I think my MIL mentioned getting them actual toy boxes for Christmas. My hubby has been saying for about a year or so that if he had the tools, he’d build them some sort of storage container. He’s getting tools for Christmas so we’ll see…hehehe!
