Linky Bloggy Button

Hey internets-

I have a new linky button over there on the right side of the screen.  I know, you have to scroll down a little to find it.  I tried to make it a bit more blog-friendly by making it 125px X 125px.  Feel free to copy that code and paste it right into your sidebar or blogroll page or wherever you think would be suitable to show me some love.  And I’ll be making my rounds trying to link all of you wonderful people that have buttons and links.

The Treasures of an 8 Year Old Boy

We celebrated OurOldest’s birthday on September 12.  Here is a photo from the night of cake and presents.  He arranged all of his gifts “just so” and I thought it was great to capture the joys of an 8 year old boy.

8 year old birthday party

He picked his cake out and helped bake it - chocolate, with chocolate icing, and chocolate chips.  And he decorated the top on his own.  His Nana and Papa bought him a Nintendo DS and some games (his favorites so far are Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones), his Granna and Grandaddy gave him cash (the new ultimate gift, I’ve discovered), a flashlight, and a compass.  We got him the new cap (though we’re making a slow transition from our beloved one to this new one – oh, well, we tried!), water bombs (because, really, is it an 8 year old birthday without such?),  a notebook and some pens “just for him”, and the pocket knife.  Yes, it is really a real pocket knife.  He’s ready.  And feeling so adventurous with it.  We also let him light his own candle.  He’s loving the new found danger of such freedom.  And we’re loving granting it to him.

Children’s Book Tuesday: The Dangerous Book For Boys

Welcome to this week’s Children’s Book Tuesday!

This week I’m gonna show the book my 2 older boys (ages 6 and 8) love.

The Dangerous Book For Boys

Written by Conn and Hal Iggulden

The Dangerous Book for Boys cover

Even the title and cover invite boys into a secret world that gives the feel of a “Boys Only Club”.  After the authors tell you why it’s important to not lose the long days of summer and the exploration that comes with them, they move on to a must-have list for boys.  Complete with a pocket knife, compass, matches (that should be dipped in wax to keep them waterproof), and other such essentials.  As you turn the pages you discover stories and how-to’s galore(such as the one below that details knots you should know – we practiced these over and over just last week).  My boys keep this book close-by most of the time and are constantly showing me new things they’ve learned from it.  There’s even an official (and very cool, might I add) website at The Dangerous Book For Boys.

Mamas, I must say, if you have issues handing this book over to your 7 year old, then you might should go read Wild At Heart by John Eldredge first - it’ll help you let go and let them be just as wild and dangerous as God created them to be.  And anyone looking for a gift for a boy between the ages of 7 and 12 should go buy this, a pocket knife, and a compass!

Just A Reminder

Tomorrow is Children’s Book Tuesday!

With only 5 linkies and a few comments I thought it was a flying success. We loved seeing what you all read to your littles. Or what you remember from your own childhood. I thought my honey put it so well, “It is interesting to see what is shaping the young minds in different fams. There is something exciting about the joy of a good children’s book(from the perspective of a Daddy).” So, let’s keep doing this thing, agreed?! I had some technical difficulty with the grab-a-button code in the post, so I put a button on the sidebar (until I find the time to figure this out completely), feel free to link it up from there, or copy the image and link my site, or just put a text link in your post. But whatever you do, get that next book off the shelf and get ready to show us what you like about it!

The Parkers and Our First Ballet

Last night we took all 4 children (and my huge contracting belly) to see the Ballet Magnificat perform “The Hiding Place” at The Summit Church.  It told the story of Corrie Ten Boom.  We discussed splitting up and leaving one parent home with 3 boys and one of us taking ThePrincess.  But, really, that’s just not how the Parkers do it.  It’s all or nothin’.  And we wanted the boys to experience it, as well.  Consequently, we were completely prepared to spend more time getting ready for the ballet than actually spent at it.  As in, be ready to roll out within 5 minutes of showtime, if it went crazy.  Sadly, the only thing that went crazy was that this gorgeous event was Standing Room Only (one gentleman did offer up his son’s seat to my 2 year old and me), and there was a spot down front for the children to sit on the floor.  Even this would not have sent us home early had BigMan not come down with an unknown allergic rash that we were concerned about.  This ballet was so unbelievable that my three older children “forgot” to sit down for an hour – so riveted were they by the story unfolding on the stage and even the 2 year old sat still on my lap only moving to get a better view of the dancers.  We left at intermission and unlike the usual “leave earlies” we were sad to do so, but really needed to get some Benadryl for our broken-out little guy.  On the way home we tried to delicately discuss, with 3 very small people, the atrocities of the Nazi party, the holocaust, and the Christ-found courage to do something right.  And later in the evening with those little people sleeping, Matt and I discussed being surprised by how emotionally moved we were by the dance, the story, and the music.  I thought maybe it was just pregnancy hormones, but I think, no, it was a sweeping gorgeous lonesome feeling that ran through the entire room.  What a magical captivating evening.
