Children’s Book Tuesday: The Dangerous Book For Boys

Welcome to this week’s Children’s Book Tuesday!

This week I’m gonna show the book my 2 older boys (ages 6 and 8) love.

The Dangerous Book For Boys

Even the title and cover invite boys into a secret world that gives the feel of a “Boys Only Club”.  After the authors tell you why it’s important to not lose the long days of summer and the exploration that comes with them, they move on to a must-have list for boys.  Complete with a pocket knife, compass, matches (that should be dipped in wax to keep them waterproof), and other such essentials.  As you turn the pages you discover stories and how-to’s galore(such as the one below that details knots you should know – we practiced these over and over just last week).  My boys keep this book close-by most of the time and are constantly showing me new things they’ve learned from it.  There’s even an official (and very cool, might I add) website at The Dangerous Book For Boys.

Mamas, I must say, if you have issues handing this book over to your 7 year old, then you might should go read Wild At Heart by John Eldredge first - it’ll help you let go and let them be just as wild and dangerous as God created them to be.  And anyone looking for a gift for a boy between the ages of 7 and 12 should go buy this, a pocket knife, and a compass!

How funny, my husband just asked me today if had had read his Wild at Heart book…guess I should do that when he’s done studying it for the second time. We have the Dangerous Book for Boys, too. After I saw the authors talk about the book on Rachel Ray, I had to buy it! The book has not been used to it’s fullest though, when the boy was only 5, he wanted to build a go-cart…I thought it was a little ambitious. I didn’t tell him that, I just kept putting it back on the shelf. The girl asked for the Daring Book for Girls for Christmas (from grandparents) and really hasn’t let me look at it; she’s very protective of it. I bet she thought it will end up on a school shelf if she let me get a hold of it.

Thanks for the reminder of the great resource!

Oh! I just checked out the Dangerous Boys & Daring Girls websites. They are awesome! I can’t wait to do and use some of the things I found. I will visit those sites again soon!

We have the Girl version of this book and my girls (the same age as your boys) love it. Don’t have a blog of my own, but I enjoy reading yours and like this new favorite book piece.

! – We greatly enjoyed reading Wild at Heart at our house and I try to apply that mindset in raising my 2 (soon to be 3) boys. I have seen “The Dangerous Book” at our library numerous times and never picked it up or checked it out. No particular reason. It’s now on my list to get next time!

We love this book! My older son has been quoting Shakespeare — it’s AWESOME!

They have toys to go along with this at Burger King right now. So funny you posted this b/c just Friday, the kids got the Happy Meals, and I told them about the books, and was wondering if they would like them.

I would participate, but I am too lazy to go take a pic of a book…maybe I will think ahead for next week.

So do your boys have their own compasses and pocketknives? If not, maybe that’s a quest for aunt jill? =) (I recently bought my dad a compass for his birthday – so they’re even good for older boys!)

so, i’m going to try again in a few minutes – see if it’ll let you view without signing in… =)
