Getting Ink Out

Around Christmastime I made some Dress-A-Dolls for a friend.  A few days before I was finished and ready to deliver them BigMan got ahold of two of them with an ink pen.

ink-mishap

I almost threw up.  Really.  Physically, felt my stomach turn.

I called my husband at work desperate.  He called me right back with a google search solution for ink stains.  Hairspray.  Amazingly I still had a can up in the cabinet (why on earth?  and from how long ago?  because you know, I don’t have a secret “dress like the 80′s” night or anything).

The secret is, lay a paper towel or handtowel (anything absorbent) under the stained item, then saturate it with hairspray (this takes a lot of bravery, but hey, it’s already ruined what do you have to lose?), then dab it with another towel.  Do this repeatedly, being sure to use a clean part of the towels.  It will come clean.  Smells alot like 1992, but hey.  When it’s all out you can wash the item and it’s good as new.  Amazing.

I somehow didn’t get an after picture.  I know, what was I thinking?  You’ll just have to trust me this time.

My 7th grade art teacher taught us that trick. It came in mighty handy when my sister shook her pen that had quit writing and ink went EVERYWHERE in our room. On the beds. On the new carpet. On the big white stuffed polar bear. On our clothes. It was a disaster that we could not let our mother see.

Hairspray to the rescue. We closed the door (obviously) so we wouldn’t get “caught” and probably came fairly close to asphixiation (sp?) as anyone could and live to tell about it. But every single drop of ink came out.

    It really does work!

I did that too! My 2 year old wrote ALL over the back of my sofa in pen. Although it is microfiber, and hence, already easier to clean, the pen wiped off with hair spray easier than it did without. He also wrote all over my vintage rocking chair seat, NOT microfiber, and it still came out!!
Works best when still fresh, though. Interesting blog!
