mapping

so, i hung the map where i could see it all the time.  i had already put a star on it for where we are to get them used to finding us on the map.

and then when we saw on the news the other day that chile had a volcano and the boys were going “oh, cool, look at that.”  i thought, “huh, now i could do something with that enthusiasm.”  so i drew up a quick volcano (barely recognizable, mind you) and stuck it on southern chile.  i didn’t mention it to the boys.  they found it later on their own and you’d've thought they discovered buried treasure.  it was on.

when they watched a discovery show on weapons that was all about the samurai sword, yep, i drew one up and stuck it on japan.

we were watching Around The World In 80 Days (with jackie chan – pretty fine – my oldest has watched it repeatedly) and we saw Big Ben.  “where’s that?”, they asked.  and away i went to draw a clock.

it’s turned into great fun.  they check it everyday.  i better up my game.

I wish I had room to hang up a huge map on our wall instead of just a globe. Hmm….maybe I will just cover a window!

Great idea! We dont have a place to hang a map in our learning area…. so we used to place our map on the dining room table, and I bought thick plastic from Wal-Mart to put over top of it. They sell it by the roll and you cut what you need. Its the type of plastic used for table cloth. Then we could see the map and it wouldn’t get all gross…

Another tip did years ago….is I put Velcro on my map. Both sides. One side is US, the other was the world. Then we had a yard stick with the other part of the Velcro and nailed it to the wall. It held the maps in place and we could change them out anytime we wanted…

I just dont have room anymore. :( The kids sure loved it… anytime a geography question came up they would run to the table or the other map…

wow… that was a tad long winded… sorry! Your post just brought back some fun memories when my kids were small. *Ü*

LOVE this idea!! We are just starting to put our “learning room” together (remember my girls are just 3 and 2) but I knew I wanted a large map poster on the wall… that just seems educational but to be honest, I am not sure what I would have done with it!! Now I have a plan…. FUN!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey, that’s a great idea! I’ve thought about doing pins on a map, but actual visual reminders would be so much better!

    I may use this!

After seeing this the first time, I decided to redo our “school room” (aka dining room). I put our two large maps up in there and we’re following my parents’ Europe trip, using drawings. Thanks again for the creative idea!

Oh, and I also took your artwork display idea!! We hung ribbons across the wall to show off their favorite art or school projects. I used colored paper clips instead of clothes pins, though.
