husband: “whatchya doin?”
me: “dishes and laundry.”
husband: “come sit with me.”
me: “hold on. i’ll be right there. let me switch this load and get these dishes finished up.”
husband: “won’t you come now?”
me: “just a second.”
husband: “if this were 2,700 years ago and we were in mary and martha’s house who do you think you’d be right now?”
me, from the laundry room: “if you were Jesus i’d be mary.”

okay, are you ready for some news?
i probably won’t be back for awhile.
i know, i know, i’ll miss you dearly, too.
i’m taking a blogging break due to decisions based on what is absolutely necessary monetarily too keep. no, you really don’t need dsl to survive. as much as it feels that way, you don’t.
and this is not the first time in my blogging life - if you look at my archives there’s a mysterious hole from august to december of ‘06. same reason. and i promised you i’d be back then, too. and see, i made good. so here i am promising the same. i’ll be back. with lots of news and great “look how much they’ve grown” pictures and funny stories. in the meantime, if you’re new around here or if you’re one who’s been here from the very beginning - just go back through my archives on the side bar. do one a day and it will feel like i never left! and before you know it, i’ll be back.

still here.
we went to a friend’s house yesterday where there were 3 tired mamas and 11 children. and many swapped clothes (first round of “keeping for the next baby” clothes given away - and feelin’ fine about it!). and i hit a hat sale on the way there, to boot. i got a bunch of learnin’ done before we left for her house and a bunch of cleanin’ done when we got back. grabbed fast food dinner on the way home. kids in bed by 6:49p. settled in to watch my name is earl and ugly betty and csi. no war last night, but looking forward to it coming back on tonight. in the bed to sleep by 9:45pm. everyone but the youngest slept all night. an awesome day all around.

i’ve seen this on others’ blogs and i loved it. it will be a work in progress, added to as i think of new stuff.
collecting cicada shells with my cousins, hearing their songs in the evening. chasing lightening bugs ”there’s one!” “where?” “there! no, wait. over there!” hearing whipporwills as the sun goes down. watching turtles lay eggs and waiting for them to hatch. killing copperheads with the hoe.
i’m from tomatoes in the garden every year. 5 gallon buckets of cucumbers and tomatoes in the kitchen. pickling jars lined up on the counter. dill pickles. little whole sweet pickles. bread and butter pickles. cucumbers and onions in vinegar and sugar. tomato juice. canned tomatoes. homemade rotel frozen for winter in tupperware. fresh tomatoes with mixed ranch dressing on top. digging potatoes out of the dirt with worms crawling around.
i’m from a house and yard always in process of something. homemade brick paths. homemade wooden decks. hand-laid wood floors. ripping up carpet. hanging wall-paper.
i’m from fishing in the spring. eating fresh-caught crappie with smothered potatoes and onions.
i’m from “sit still, gal.” “sally goodin’” “sally ann” “whatcha think this is? your birthday?” “you can do anything you put your mind to.” “when you think you can’t go any further, then you go some more.” “when you start something you finish it.” “you’re as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.” “don’t get in a piss fight with a skunk.” “get up, girl, we’ve got people to see, places to go, and things to do.” “turn out those lights when you leave the room.” “hey, hollywood.”
i’m from summer vacations every year. the beach, the mountains, washington, d.c. laying out in the sun to “get a tan.”
i’m from a city girl and a country boy. i’m from a teacher and an ap&l man. notes in my lunch bag. long afternoons at school with my mama. being allowed to make bulletin boards for her and help grade papers.
i’m from sledding down hills on “sleds” made of cardboard boxes. a playhouse made from an old metal building. a dollhouse made with the same interior as my own house. learning my multiplication tables with daddy at the kitchen table. making a “robot” out of “burple” containers, spools of thread, tinfoil, and a roll-around shelf.
i’m from neapolitan ice cream at my grandmother’s house. avoiding horse racing season because of the traffic. mcclard’s barbeque. orange julius.
i’m from drinking coffee with cream and sugar in the mornings with my mama and daddy. homemade biscuits and gravy in the mornin’s. fried bologna and fried weinies and fried eggs.
i’m from willie, waylon, and the boys. watching the cosby show as a family. watching the miss america pageant every year and picking our favorite. falling asleep on my daddy’s chest while football played every weekend. rooting for the hogs. talking football before the games. keeping up with news and current events and who’s running for president.
i’m from taking clothes in from the line. listening to the swish, swish sound of my daddy polishing his shoes at the end of his bed in the mornings. listening to the spray-hiss of my daddy starching and ironing his clothes.
i’m from organization. containers for everything.
i’m from fish in aquariums. hamsters in cages. dogs outside. cats. always cats.
i’m from picking blackberries when it’s hot. eating them off the vine. savoring blackberry cobbler warm from the oven.
i’m from shaking the popcorn around in a pan of oil on the stove. yelling, “i’ll get it!” when the phone rings and trying to beat my sister to it. walking around the kitchen twirling the phone cord on my fingers while talking. taking the first cordless phone down the driveway to see “how far it will go.” commodore 64/128 and printers that make so much noise when they print out a banner for a birthday.
i’m from exploring the woods. playing with frogs. picking ticks off the dogs. chasing lizards.

there’s a loophole in the system.
why, yes, there is.
my phone has been shut off and yet…
here i am looking at the cyberworld.
and the upstanding citizen that i am? yes, i am still using the internet.
(does it make anything better if i’m amazingly grateful?)

he plays and sleeps with his daddy. remember, that’s a big deal?
he cut his first tooth last night. this milestone almost broke me. one of our games is to let him chew on my chin. it won’t be long now before that’s over. aah, the twinge of sadness. and he’s doing that get up on knees and hands and rocking some - the prep for crawling! yea, you, little man! he has his first ever sickness. he has our cold. i hate it. which means his 6 month shots will be delayed.
in other news, my second born read his first word yesterday! i was so excited! i’ve discovered i like to use a combination of Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons and Hooked On Phonics. so we’re going back and forth with both boys.
i’m reading Little House in the Big Woods to the kiddos. the boys are, surprisingly to me, really enjoying it. we made hasty pudding yesterday since that’s what laura’s grandma made. note: the kiddos didn’t like it. i didn’t mind it.
sciencemadesimple.com i found it yesterday. awesome resource. we learned about why the leaves change colors in the fall.
the things they say: my girl for the longest kept telling me the baby had “pizza” in his ear and to get it out. this disturbed me because i wouldn’t put it past her to put pizza in his ear. finally figured out it was just the orangy ear goop! “pizza” - too funny!
my second born said for a while “he’s so chutesy.” for cutesy. and he would say it in this little high-pitched baby voice. i loved it.
my oldest who has spoken so well for so long still says “wep wipes” now, i’m aware all it would take would be for me to correct him once, but i love it. i love that he still calls it that. i will try to correct him before he’s an adolescent. (unlike my husband who thought ambulance was “ambliance” for ever - ann, now, i fully understand!!)
my girl has dancing time everyday. everyday she asks for music to be turned on and she goes to an empty place in the living room and twirls around. usually, after putting on a dress-up dress.
my oldest has started taking his own showers.
wow, you mean they get independent? do i really want that as much as i once thought? raising kids is a huge mix of happy and sad all rolled into one, isn’t it? i love what i’m doing. it’s been a long road to loving it. but i’m here now. and how great.

you start planning what times you must be in front of the tv for when premiere week starts.
you plan the kids’ naps around what time you will put them to bed.
you start dinner at 4pm.
you start baths at 5:30pm.
you have all three bigger children in their beds by 12 minutes until 7pm.
you make the necessary quiet-down-or-i’ll-seperate-y’all visits to their rooms on commercial breaks.
you flip between the War and all the other shows on commercial break.
you have to decide if you want to see The Big Bang Theory more or finish Chuck that had a pretty good start.
you run to pee after holding it for as long as you can during that “limited commercial” showing of Heroes.

my friend, lisa, tagged me to give 8 random facts about myself. is there really anything left that you don’t know about me?!
1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.1. i don’t have a favorite color. i always thought something was wrong with me because it changed frequently when i was a kid, or else i just couldn’t ever make up mind. in the last year i’ve realized, no, i love all colors. especially combinations of colors. and it makes me different. and that’s a good thing. i’m a rainbow kinda girl.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
2. one of my secret desires is to own a mini cooper.
3. i was interviewed for a junior high newspaper once and it asked me what my pet peeve was. my answer was crooked pictures on a wall. as i sit here typing there is a picture that a nerf football hit approximately 3 weeks ago that i haven’t bothered to straighten. in fact, i’m trying to decide if it gives the line of pictures personality or if i’m just justifying my laziness.
4. i’m one of the most insecure people you’ve ever met. having kids, being married, and getting older is changing that. it’s very freeing. it’s a good thing,
5. i think often about when Jesus comes back. i hope it’s soon. and i sincerely hope we’re pre-tribulation. i don’t think about it in fear, i think about it in anticipation. i hate the evil in the world and i’m ready for Him to reclaim His land. i’m ready to be a bride again, only much purer this time around.
6. before i began trying to figure out who Christ is i believed everything was subject to perspective. that there was no absolute truth. and then when i began seeking Truth i went through a time when i believed almost everything was black or white - you were right or you were wrong. and now, i know it’s not that simple. some things are definitely outside of our opinion, but most things are just gray. and that also is good.
7. i love Beauty and The Geek, Ugly Betty, My Name Is Earl, 30 Rock is growing on me, Heroes, football and i’m sure there’re more that i’m forgetting. like, love them enough, that in the morning when i realize what day it is i get excited that the show is coming on that night.
8. fall is my favorite time of year. i love the cooler winds. i love wearing jeans and long sleeves. i love the trees. and the leaves that swirl. i love football. i love how all the kids and animals get more active again. i love how the sunshine looks different, darker a little. and i love how even as everything is dying, God is already preparing for when there will be new life in just a few months. even the rocks that will cry out and the wind that obeys Him rest for a time.
-k.t., mandy, megan, karen, chickadee, randi, becky s., jennifer m. you’re up!
