lettin’ ‘em be…

wild at heart.

if you haven’t read the book, read it. my husband tells me it’s life changing for men. and has changed how i look at and deal with my hubby and boy children.

anyway, just the 2 parker girls went to wal-mart the other night and left the parker men to party it up. i called on my way home at about 8pm (remember, in our house bedtime is around 7pm) and pearl says immediately, “i don’t have the boys in bed yet.” i figured, it’s a beautiful thing – the boys need their time. and i hear in the background from my 5 year old, “tell her we’re lookin’ for dinosaurs.” daddy clarifies with, “we’re watching jurassic park.” in my head, “WHAT?!” out loud, “oh, yeah? ok.” i get home and am greeted by 2 very excited boys telling me all about how one of the dinosaurs ate a man and a goat’s leg was on a car. this. at bedtime. again, inside, “WHAT?! there’ll be nightmares that i’ll have to deal with all night.” outside, “really, that’s cool!” and, as i’m watching the show with my boys the book comes back to me. and i realize this is what they need. danger. excitement. time to be boys and men. adventure. and i think back to something my 3 year old said not long ago. while eating fresh baked cookies, “daddy let us do something really dangerous one time.” mama, “really? what’s that?” followed by our 5 year old, “he let us eat cookies that weren’t cooked yet.” and i laughed and laughed. THIS is dangerous. something mama wouldn’t ever approve of. :) and daddy let ‘em do it on the sly. i love it. it definitely takes a daddy to teach his boys how to be men.

as a tag note, i hear from the living room last night while the boys are watching the 2 dinosaurs raid the kitchen trying to get the kids in jurassic park, “are they going to get the kids, daddy?” “yes, dinosaurs like eating little kids.”

also overheard this morning, on a related note, “don’t mess with mama this morning, she’s cranky. just don’t mess with mama while she’s pregnant – being pregnant makes her crazy.” true. true.
